Waiting for Shinigami

Chapter 13

It was late the following morning when Miss Gracie finally woke up. Heero called Duo on the way to the hospital and hardly had to slow down to pick him up. Miss Gracie laughed a little when she saw them, not fifteen minutes after they received the news.

"Hello, my dears," she said with a warm smile. Except for the bandage wrapped around her head, and the bruise on her face she seemed quite her old self.

"How are you feeling, Miss Gracie?" Duo asked, leaning down to kiss the old woman's cheek.

"I'm all right, dear boy, thanks to you, I hear," she replied.

Heero followed his lover's example and placed a kiss on her cheek as well. "You had us worried."

"Oh, I'm a tough old bird. It won't keep me down for long. Veruca says we're all going dancing soon, and I think that's just fine, especially if she brings that charming young friend of yours. He came by before work this morning and left these for me," she said, gesturing to a tasteful arrangement of flowers by the bed. "He's all she's talked about since I woke up. I hope to meet him soon."

"I'm sure you will," Heero said, and then, a little reluctantly, changed the subject. "Miss Gracie, I'm not sure if Veruca told you, but I'm taking your case…"

"Oh, of course," Miss Gracie said, not minding at all. "You want to know about the incident. Of course, it looked like a robbery, but that's just rubbish. How many women my age have something worth taking? I witnessed a drug deal, a rather large one, and the dealer
didn't seem to like that overly much. He sent one of his goonies after me, and the thug hit me a couple of times and threw me into the alley. That's when I blacked out, and I guess hitting my head against the wall is what gave me this gash." Miss Gracie seemed proud of her story, like she had been dying to tell someone.

"I need for you to describe the dealer and the man that hit you, if you can," Heero said.

Miss Gracie's smile was a grim one. "I'd be happy to,"

It was some hours later when Miss Gracie met Wufei for the first time. By that time she had already gone over much of her story repeatedly and agreed to meet with a sketch artist the following day. What had started as a simple mugging report had quickly turned into one of the biggest drug busts in a decade, if Miss Gracie's numbers could be trusted. Preventers were crawling all over the building. If anyone got wind that Miss Gracie was alive and in good
health, she might be in trouble. Wufei got the night shift.

"I am honored to meet you, Miss Gracie. Maxwell and your niece have told me a great deal about you."

"Don't believe a word of it. If it was nice, they were just saying it because they were worried. Duo thinks I'm a nosy old busybody, and I'm an absolute thorn in Veruca's side."

When both protested to this, she laughed. "You see? They're still worried. Wait until I get a chance to remind both of them how bothersome I can be,"

"As long as you're at least twice as bothersome for Marcus Palato," Heero said, coming back into the room with a thick folder in his hand. "This is our guy. Has to be. Suspected to be one of the biggest drug suppliers anywhere. Twenty-five arrests, no
convictions. He matches the description, and he's the only man in this area who could be moving that kind of volume. We'll get the artist in, just in case, and if the connection is made, I'll bring you some pictures of his so-called bodyguards and you can pick out the one that hit you."

"I'm sure that will be fine," Miss Gracie said, "now go home and get some rest. You've been at it all day. Spend some time with Duo. He's been here all day, too."

Heero smiled at the lady. "I think that's a wonderful idea. Nothing sounds as good as a good meal, a hot shower, and a soft bed right now."

Duo chuckled softly beside him. "How about sharing all three with me?"

Heero put his arm around his lover and pressed a kiss against his forehead. "Even better,"

"Good night, Miss Gracie," Duo said, pulling Heero toward the door. "We'll be back tomorrow."

When they were gone, Veruca rolled her eyes. "Those two," she said. Wufei gave her a sly smile. "Jealous?"

Veruca glanced at her aunt, but Miss Gracie was climbing out of bed to go to the bathroom and not paying the slightest attention to them. "Maybe a little," she conceded. "But I've got more important things to worry about right now."

"Like what?" he asked, looking at her intently.

"Oh, perhaps the fact that my aunt could be taken out by drug dealers," she replied sarcastically.

Wufei wasn't sure how she would react, but he had to touch her. He placed a friendly hand on her shoulder. "But worrying about that is my job. Sleep easily, Veruca. I will take care of you and your aunt."

She smiled at him. "Thank you for that." They stared at each other for a long moment, then the bathroom door opened, and it was shattered.

Wufei nodded to both women and went to take his place just outside the door. Veruca helped her aunt back into the hospital bed, and then settled down into the chair beside it and, given confidence by Wufei's surety, fell asleep.
